CPS Lives is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that pairs artists, designers, thinkers, and makers with Chicago Public schools to tell the story of public education in Chicago. CPS Lives supports professional artists who want to work within public schools by:
- paid artist residencies
- student workshops
- mentorships
- exhibitions
- publications
So far, 70 artists have worked with 72 schools to contribute to our accessible digital archive of public school history, which you can view here.
The Chicago Public School system is the nation’s third largest public school district. Serving over 322,000 students in more than 630 schools, the sheer scale of the Chicago Public School system renders it opaque to the general public. Often, stories of successes and resilience remain untold. CPS Lives shows the power of public education in Chicago and reinforces belief in the district’s mission “to provide a high quality public education for every child in every neighborhood.”
